    About the Role:

    Due to an internal promotion, we are seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to step into the role of Head of Department (HOD) for our Biochemistry Laboratory. This pivotal position is crucial to maintaining the department's high standards of diagnostic services, and you will be responsible for leading and managing all operational aspects of the biochemistry service. As the HOD, you will oversee a team of dedicated laboratory professionals, ensuring their continued development and that daily operations run smoothly and efficiently.


    In addition to operational management, you will be a key driver of strategic initiatives, implementing new technologies, methods, and processes that align with both current and future needs. You will collaborate with other senior clinical leaders to support integrated patient care pathways, working closely with medical and scientific colleagues to provide the highest quality of service.


    Your responsibilities will also include managing departmental budgets, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, maintaining accreditation, and contributing to the overall improvement of service delivery. This is a leadership role that requires innovation, strategic thinking, and an ability to influence change in a complex and fast-paced environment.

    About the Team/Service/Location:

    The Biochemistry Laboratory at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital provides critical diagnostic services for a range of clinical specialties, playing a central role in patient care across the Hawkes Bay region. Our dedicated team is made up of skilled scientists, technicians, and support staff who are committed to excellence and precision in laboratory diagnostics. We pride ourselves on being a supportive and inclusive team that values collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional development.


    Our hospital is a key regional health provider, located in the heart of Hawkes Bay, and offers a wide range of clinical services to the community. The laboratory services team works in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern technology and supports a diverse population.     About You:

    We are seeking a leader with extensive experience in laboratory science and a deep understanding of biochemistry diagnostics. Your ability to foster a positive team culture, manage change, and deliver results will be vital in ensuring the ongoing success of the department. You will be able to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, from clinical teams to external partners, and will have a proven track record in laboratory management and quality assurance.


    The ideal candidate will bring the following:

    • Significant experience in a senior or management role within a clinical laboratory, ideally in the field of biochemistry.
    • Advanced knowledge of biochemistry laboratory services, including familiarity with accreditation standards and quality management processes.
    • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and inspire a diverse team of laboratory professionals.
    • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and influence decision-making.
    • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth (mandatory).
    • Experience in projects/initiatives that give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and frameworks, with the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches in healthcare settings (mandatory).
